Heavy-Duty Propane Power.
engine image

Cummins Westport B LPG Plus is the next evolution of the liquid propane gas engine. Its heavy-duty design combines the advantages of clean-burning propane power with impressive torque and advanced closed-loop electronic controls for strong performance in a variety of applications. The B LPG Plus offers a 195-hp rating for both on- and off-highway applications such as shuttles, buses, local pickup and delivery trucks, step vans, yard spotters, recycling trucks, street sweepers and more. It is known for durable, reliable power with the lowest emissions and the quietest possible operation. Every time.

To build in its exceptional durability and reliability, we began with heavy-duty components from the Cummins B Series diesels, which provide a strong advantage over converted gasoline engines. Then, we integrated these robust components and features into an engine specifically developed to run on alternative fuels. The B LPG Plus has a state-of-the-art Electronic Control Module (ECM) to control the fuel system, engine sensors and a sophisticated closed-loop, lean-burn electronic ignition, while providing self-diagnostics for easier maintenance and longer service intervals. The ECM also adjusts for varying fuel composition, so you can safely use HD-10 propane, the widest range of fuel quality of any engine in this class.

And no one offers a better base warranty than Cummins Westport. To view and print a PDF file of our B LPG Plus brochure, click here.

As of January 1, 2010, the B LPG Plus continues to be available in Latin America and Mexico, however the B LPG Plus engine is no longer available for purchase in North America where new EPA regulations came into effect January 1, 2010.  Cummins and Cummins Westport continue to support all B LPG Plus engines for warranty, service, and parts availability as required. The B LPG Plus is a 5.9-liter six-cylinder propane gas engine with ultra-low emissions, low NOx, that is cleaner than diesel. It is EPA 2007 certified with a catalyst and features Lean-Burn Spark-Ignited (LBSI) combustion.

Unique "Plus" technology with full-authority electronic controls produces exceptional performance over a wide range of vehicle operating conditions and duty cycles. Its state-of-the-art ECM provides multiple benefits, including programmable engine parameters, full drive-by-wire, multi-speed PTO, cruise control, road speed governing, idle speed control and shutdown, accelerator interlock, engine protection system and much more.

The powerful ECM also adjusts for varying fuel composition, so you can safely use HD-10 propane, the widest range of fuel quality of any engine in this class.

What's even more impressive is that the noise output of the engine is up to 14 dBA quieter than a diesel. Your customers will notice the difference. Every time.

  • Air/Fuel Regulation - Cummins closed-loop electronic control system is based on Cummins CM556 ECM. Sensors for various engine parameters, exhaust backpressure, intake manifold temperature, fuel inlet pressure, knock detection, air-fuel ratio and fuel mass flow. Electronically controlled wastegated turbocharger.
  • Air Intake System - Charge air cooling is utilized to reduce emissions by lowering intake manifold air pressures.
  • Accessory Belt Drive System - Self-tensioning serpentine polyvee belt accessory drive system for water pump, engine-mounted fan hub and most alternators. Gear-driven air compressor with provision for gear-driven hydraulic pump.
  • Catalyst - required for all models. Engine is certified to U.S. EPA 2007 standard.
  • Complete Rebuildability - The cylinder block has multiple re-bore capability. Service cylinder sleeves and valve guides are also available if needed.
  • Control System/Electronics - Features full drive-by-wire, enhanced controls and full electronics. The ECM monitors engine sensors, controls fuel and ignition systems, sets engine parameters and provides state-of-the-art data links and the ability to interface with Cummins INSITE™ and QuickCheck diagnostic service tools for fast troubleshooting. In addition, the ECM allows engine performance to be tailored to fit the vehicle mission.

    Electronic features include:

    • Operating capability on wider range of fuel quality - HD-5 and HD-10
    • Road speed governing
    • Accelerator interlock
    • SAE J1587/J1939 data links
    • PTO control
    • Cruise control
    • Engine protection system
  • Crankshaft - Induction-hardened forged-steel crankshaft provides maximum strength and multiple regrind capability for long-term cost savings. Crankshaft is supported by seven main bearings for optimum durability.
  • Cylinder Block - Full-skirted block increases rigidity and strength. The design provides superior durability, as well as superior piston ring and bearing life.
  • Pistons - For extended piston and ring life, a Ni-Resist insert is cast into the aluminum piston and carries the top piston ring.
  • Turbocharger - Holset turbocharger with watercooled bearing housing and electronically controlled wastegate provides improved response and performance without sacrificing durability.

The heavy-duty B LPG Plus propane engine takes its rugged character from the block, crankshaft and other major components from Cummins 5.9-liter B Series diesel. Which provides a strong advantage for the B LPG Plus over converted gasoline engines.

The durability of the B LPG Plus is further strengthened with a powerful Electronic Control Module (ECM) that drives a complete engine protection system that regulates rpm to lower the risk of progressive damage if a severe fault code is logged. Plus, its wide fuel tolerance - down to methane number 65 - increases uptime in applications worldwide.

To complete the lifetime durability of this exceptional engine package, its life-to-rebuild and rebuildability is identical to its rugged Cummins diesel counterparts.

Combining the rugged design of Cummins heavy-duty diesel engines, and the "Plus" technology of the reliable Cummins Westport B Gas Plus, the B LPG Plus features full-authority electronics. Its highly efficient state-of-the-art ECM continuously monitors vital engine temperatures and pressures, controls the fuel system, engine sensors and an advanced Cummins high-energy ignition system - a system designed for easier maintenance and longer service intervals, as well as self-diagnostics. The Electronic Control Module (ECM) also features state-of-the-art data links and comprehensive engine diagnostics through Cummins INSITE™ and QuickCheck diagnostic service tools for fast troubleshooting.
