Cummins ISL combines High-pressure Common-Rail fuel injection with our patented Variable Geometry Turbocharger (VG Turbo) for superior performance. The VG Turbo constantly adjusts to deliver the precise amount of air for optimal performance at every rpm. The result is quicker throttle response with less turbo "lag." Your firefighters will appreciate the quicker acceleration every run. Ratings for the ISL range from 330 to 400 horsepower, with up to 1250 lb-ft of peak torque.

The roller followers also help give the ISL increased engine braking capacity (more than 330 braking hp with the optional C Brake™ by Jacobs®*) for improved control when stopping.

Plus, when you need rugged, reliable auxiliary power, there's no better choice than an Onan® genset. Cummins engines and Onan gensets are backed by the same worldwide network of distributors/dealers, so we're able to offer design, manufacturing and customer support synergies not found in any other company supporting the fire/emergency industry.

The ISL's outstanding fuel economy and extremely long maintenance intervals will benefit your fire department for years to come. For the final word on reliability and durability, be sure to read our standard warranty program.

The combination of superior performance from the ISL and strong support from our local distributor network are two reasons why Cummins is fast becoming the #1 choice for fire apparatus everywhere in North America.

A new High-Pressure Common-Rail (HPCR) fuel system maintains high injection pressures for optimum performance at every rpm. The new fuel system and revised gear train design combine to make the ISL up to 50% quieter in operation. All this, combined with a 24-valve cylinder head and centered injection, gives the ISL excellent combustion characteristics that result in outstanding fuel economy too.

You can depend on the ISL to last a long time, with replaceable mid-stop cylinder liners, articulated steel-top pistons, roller camshaft followers, a high-efficiency lube cooler, targeted piston cooling and many other heavy-duty features.

Every heavy-duty Cummins ISL is designed for years of dependable use, with many design features found in every ISX and ISM engine. Including our patented VG Turbo, which has only one moving part in the hot exhaust stream (competitive turbos have dozens). Heavy-duty features deliver significant benefits:

  • Articulated steel-top pistons are stronger, help improve piston ring life.
  • Direct piston cooling nozzles lower piston temperatures for longer life.
  • Roller camshaft followers extend the camshaft life.
  • Self-tensioning belt drive system drives both fan and alternator for reduced maintenance and increased belt life.
  • Combination full-flow/bypass lube oil filter delivers better filtration for longer component life.
  • High-efficiency lube cooler lowers oil temperatures and improves lubrication.

Most Variable Geometry Turbochargers use flexible vanes, with literally dozens of wear points and individual parts constantly moving under intense pressure and heat.

The Holset Variable Geometry Turbocharger is different. It replaces the movable vanes with a simple sliding nozzle, eliminating dozens of parts and increasing dependability and durability. This patented design has already been proven highly effective and reliable in over 150,000 vehicles worldwide.

Cummins ISL has been redesigned with a strengthened block and roller followers so that you can add the optional C Brake™ by Jacobs®*. Created by the manufacturer of the famous Jake Brake®** for big rigs, the C Brake has been optimized for use with the ISL, generating up to 330 braking horsepower. Not only will your fire apparatus be safer on the road, you'll save money down the road. Because you'll be using your service brakes less, they could last substantially longer.

Oil and oil filter changes for the ISL are set at 500-hour, 6-month or 20,000-mile (32,000 km) intervals. The overhead adjustment doesn't need to be checked for 5,000 hours, 48 months or 150,000 miles (240,000 km).

The primary fuel filter changes are set at 500-hour, 6-month or 20,000-mile (32,000 km) intervals. Secondary fuel filter changes can go longer, at 1,000-hour, 12-month or 40,000-mile (64,000 km) intervals.

The standard coolant change interval is 240,000 miles (385,000 km). However, Cummins ISL is fully compatible with long-life coolant/antifreeze formulas which allow changes out to every 600,000 miles (960,000 km) or 6 years. If the engine is equipped with a coolant filter, it will need to be replaced on the same intervals as the oil filter. Follow maintenance guidelines recommended by the manufacturer for safe use with extended service intervals.
