The QSK38 retains the proven V12 configuration and 38-liter displacement of its K1500E predecessor, but incorporates a new High Pressure Modular Common Rail (MCR) fuel system and an advanced electronic control module in order to meet U.S. EPA Tier 2 emissions requirements. Other features include new injectors, pistons, turbocharger and valve covers. Together with a robust block crankshaft and camshaft, this results in an average design life of 625,000 gallons to overhaul.

The QSK38 with MCR technology helps to reduce noise emissions and engine vibration, resulting in a safer and more comfortable work environment for equipment operators and mine personnel.  The MCR  fuel system maintains high injection pressures regardless of engine speed - unlike conventional injection systems - for exceptional performance at every rpm. Ratings at 1086 hp and 1200 hp (810-895 kW) deliver the power you need for haul trucks and excavators.

Cummins analysis-led computer modeling has enabled Cummins to optimize the in-cylinder combustion system of the QSK38 which results in a reduction of NOx by 40% and particulate matter by 60%, achieving U.S. EPA Tier 2 emissions levels with minimal impact to fuel consumption.  And because the QSK38 meets emission requirements with an in-cylinder solution, there’s minimal installation impact with no complex aftertreatment.

Every QSK38 engine is covered by Cummins base warranty, one of the most comprehensive and simplest plans in the industry.

  • Power Cylinder Package - Proven single-piece ferrous cast ductile iron pistons and cooling nozzles for maximum durability and reliability - combined with an advanced piston design that uses nitrided liners and cast-iron top rings to handle high injection pressures and provide a 10% longer life-to-overhaul compared to two-piece pistons.
  • High Pressure Modular Common Rail (MCR) Fuel System - Cummins high pressure fuel pump and modular common rail system provides full-authority electronic control of the fuel pump and injectors for precise control of both injection pressure and timing. Each injector includes its own integrated accumulator, which helps to eliminate pressure pulsation between injectors and improve stability.
  • Prelub™ System - Eliminates wear from cold and hot starts - increases life-to-overhaul by as much as 25%. Integral or remote mounting options.
  • Quantum System Electronics - High-speed Electronic Control Module (ECM) with a self-cooling mount is isolated from detrimental vibration loading. A field-proven, fully-sealed wiring harness with fail-safe connectors integrates the ECM with the engine sensors for optimized engine performance, monitoring and protection.  Quantum system technology is ideal for tough mining applications that demand continuous uptime carrying hundreds of tons capacity.
  • Fleetguard® ES Filtration - The two off-engine first stage (suction-side) filters provide 7 micron filtration and include water separation capability. The three second stage (pressure-side) filters are mounted on-engine and provide 3 micron filtration downstream of the gear pump. Service interval for both filter stages is 250 hours.
  • Advanced Engine Monitoring - Allows you to monitor engine performance cylinder by cylinder on a real-time basis. Also provides trending charts to help you keep preventive maintenance to a minimum without risking engine damage.
  • Two-Stage Cummins Oil Filters - Combination full-flow and bypass filtration to effectively remove harmful sludge and up to three times as many contaminants to reduce engine wear.
  • Premium Fan Drive – Incorporates large matched and sealed bearings, improved oil seals, and an improved idler system.  The fan drives have fixed fan centers with tensioning provided by a manually adjusted and maintenance free idler.  The fan drive is available with or without an electronically controlled oil-actuated fan clutch.

Longer Service Intervals - Achieved with Centriguard™ centrifuge filters, the CENTINEL™ continuous oil replacement system and the self-cleaning ELIMINATOR™ full-flow/bypass filtration system

Centriguard™ Centrifuge Filters - The Fleetguard Centriguard from Cummins Filtration is available for aftermarket installation to complement the spin-on lube filters for greater engine protection.
CENTINEL™ Continuous Oil Replacement System – Extends oil drain and oil filter life, while improving the protective quality of engine oil.  Minimizes oil disposal costs, reduces downtime and increases productivity.
ELIMINATOR™ Filtration System – Eliminates oil filter disposal headaches with a full-flow and centrifugal system that incorporates a permanent core. This optional feature eliminates up to 90% of lube system maintenance costs while increasing uptime by allowing 1,000 hours between filter changes.

Many options are available* to ensure your Cummins engine integrates perfectly into your product, including:
