EDERVEEN, The Netherlands (December 17, 2013) — Cummins announced that ISZ13 diesel engines have been installed in 3 Rally Trucks by team Ginaf Rally Power for the Dakar rally (5-18 January 2014). Ginaf builds specialist heavy-duty vehicles for earthmoving and mining, and has used this experience to develop rally trucks capable of overcoming the toughest conditions across Argentina, Chile and Bolivia.
“We have started a three year project, together with Ginaf Rally Power (Trucks) and diesel engine manufacturer Cummins to develop a new rally truck platform which is lighter, lower, more manoeuvrable and more reliable than its predecessor”, said Edwin van Ginkel, director Ginaf Service and driver of team Ginaf Rally Power.
“The new Ginaf rally truck incorporates various improvements compared with the previous version and other competitors in the Dakar. The 13 litre Cummins ISZ13 diesel engine enables us to save 600kg on the front axle, while maintaining up to 900hp and a maximum torque of 3500 Nm,” explained van Ginkel.
“Four-wheel-steering will significantly improve our manoeuvrability through the difficult conditions during the stages. We expect this to help us gain valuable time in the overall classification. Another new feature is the inventive construction of the payload area behind the cab. Instead of steel piping, the skeleton is now built with inflatable tubes, ensuring a solid structure and further reducing overall weight. For optimal safety, the truck is also equipped with a GPS guided, automatic speed limiter. This ensures the trucks keep to the maximum allowed speed in each area.”
The standard power rating of the ISZ13 is 525hp with a maximum torque of 2508 Nm. To achieve the required rally specification some modifications were made to increase engine speed and fueling capabilities. These included an improved exhaust manifold, a modified turbocharger and new fuel injectors.
“The extreme conditions of the race offer an ideal platform to showcase the performance and reliability of the Cummins ISZ13 engine. We are excited to be part of the Ginaf team for their Dakar rally challenge, and are confident that this experienced, energetic and dedicated team will deliver great results over the next few years, guided by Edwin van Ginkel, Wuf van Ginkel and Jos Smink.”, says Elie van Maren, Managing Director, Cummins Distribution Europe.
